Spectrum Support Founder Katherine Peereboom says while some autistic individuals “think the lockdown is fantastic,” there are others who “are finding it really challenging”. For those people who fall into the first category, “isolation is their comfort zone, so getting to retreat into their bedroom with the iPad is something they thoroughly enjoy,” she said.
Ms Peereboom said “school age autistic kids need a structure routine really helps them to understand where they are in the day and what is expected of them”.
She said it was absolutely critical that during this period of time parents and carers of children who are on the spectrum “look after themselves”.
