What Happened to The Rocket Rods?

From it's beginnings as a legitimately cutting-edge public transportation concept to be used in Walt Disney's early designs for EPCOT, the PeopleMover is now a legendary Disneyland ride that many call to be reinstalled. Why did this classic ride close down? And why on earth did Disney decide to replace it with one of their most public and well-known failed attractions...Rocket Rods?
