The Algebraic Calculus One course is purely online at Open Learning, and gives a novel and careful approach to the classical subject of Calculus, but without infinite processes or real numbers. In this video we have a look at the course, in particular the Chapter on Signed Areas, which gives a historical introduction to classical areas, introduces a linear algebraic definition of signed areas first for triangles and then quadrilaterals, discusses the cross product of planar vectors, and treats formulas of Meister and Crelle. Applications to the cross ratios of projective geometry are also discussed.
