The Kiraku Ryū is actually the descendant of three older schools, the Toda Ryū, the Kiraku Ryū and the Muteki Ryū. The most ancient origin is the Toda Ryū, founded by Toshiie Maeda, a fencing instructor who served the Toyotomi family during the Sengoku era (1467–1603). He called his school Toda in memory of one of his ancestors.
The school being inspired by several ancient schools, it is composed of many various techniques and weapons, such as Jūjutsu, Bō, Hojō (the art of tying), Iai (drawing the sword and cutting), iron fan, Jitte, Naginata, Japanese flail “Chigiriki” and Kusarigama.
