Unfortunately one year earlier than originally planned KLM today said goodbye to its Boeing 747-400 fleet. Due to the Covid19 virus KLM has just like many other carriers been hit very hard. As an old four-engine-aircraft is less economical to keep in the skies than a modern twin-engine aircraft KLM decided to phase out its 747s in order to save costs in its widebody fleet.
Due to the strict quarantine rules that are currently in place in the Netherlands and the warnings from the Dutch (military) police to not come to the airport (facing potential fines of EUR 400,-) for the farewell flight of the last KLM Boeing 747-400, we decided to stay at home and follow the flight on both flightradar24 as well as a livestream from NH Aviation. Flight KL686 arrived from MEX and was flown by captain Paul van de Ven, who is also the chief pilot of the KLM 747-400 fleet. The aircraft in use was PH-BFT, City of Tokyo.
After we saw the 747 flying overhead Schiphol we noticed it was coming into our direction while on downwind for runway 36C. We quickly grabbed the camera and managed to still film some final farewell shots from our house. :-)Many special thanks to www.liveatc.net for the ATC recordings that were used in this video.
With this video we say farewell to this iconic aircraft that served for almost 50 years in the KLM fleet. The Boeing 747-400 from KLM will be missed but its Queen of the Skies will fly forever in our hearts and memory.
Take care and stay safe,
The Otaku Aviators
