Businesses and consumers need to support the ‘rebuild of manufacturing sector’

Businesses and consumers need to support the ‘rebuild of manufacturing sector’ Coronavirus has highlighted how Australia “needs to be in a position where we can support ourselves,” which means improving local manufacturing and end dependence on Chinese and Indian imports says Industry Minister Karen Andrews.

Ms Andrews said the government “learned a lot” during this crisis, especially that there is manufacturing in Australia which needs to “ramp up to deal with the immediate crisis, but also the medium-to-long term”.

“We need to make sure that we’ve got the supply chains in place because we’re really very dependent on imports whether it be from China or from India”.

Ms Andrews told Sky News host Paul Murray there needs to be “support from consumers and we need support from businesses to rebuild the manufacturing sector”.

“Our manufacturers have to be very aware that we can’t compete on costs”.

“Manufacturing has to change in Australia from manufacturing on cost to manufacturing on value”.
