In this video we take a look at how to float on your back! Backfloating is one of the first steps to learning how to swim. This skill involves relaxing, good body position, and an understanding of the breath in order to master. This is also the first step in learning elementary backstroke or Monkey, Airplane, Soldier. While this video is using children as examples, an adult back float also uses the same fundamental skills. The three things we look for are:
1. The chin is back
2. The hips are up
3. The student takes a big breath and holds it
We use the cues arms out, legs out, big breath and hold! If the student has a good head position (chin back) they will naturally float! It is important to know that some students cannot naturally float. The kids that are all “skin and bones” or already really muscular for their size are going to have difficulty floating on their backs. Density significantly affects a students’ buoyancy.
